WVCBA’s Business Advocacy Committee looks at proposed Taxpayer Protection Act

​On Monday, April 8, the Business Advocacy Committee received a presentation from Oxnard City Manager Alex Nguyen on the protentional impacts the Taxpayer Protection and Government Accountability Act would have on city services if voters approve the statewide proposition in November.  Mr. Nguyen and the city of Oxnard are strongly opposed to the measure.

The Taxpayer Protection Act would increase the voter threshold to impose new or increased taxes and fees currently a simple majority or 55% to a super majority (67%). That would limit the services local governments and special districts can provide. There are also provisions in the proposal that would eliminate developer impact fees (such as traffic mitigation and funds for parks) and franchise fees normally paid to local government by cable and utility companies.

The Business Advocacy Committee will receive a presentation from the Taxpayer Protection Act’s proponents at their May 13 meeting. Following that, the BAC may make a position recommendation to the WVCBA Board of Directors.

WVCBA will keep its members informed on positions on this measure and others qualifying for the November 5, 2024 ballot.
