Congratulations to the WVCBA's Educator of the Month Ian McGuire, Computer Programming Teacher at ACE Charter High School! Ian was recognized on April 13 in a ceremony at the school with his family and colleagues present.

also teaches math part-time at Oxnard College and volunteered at Ventura County Office of Education's Hackaton by the Sea events.

Thank you to the generous sponsors of the program - Coastal Embroidery, Trophies Etc., and Coastal Sign Shop - and to those who graciously donated gifts to honor our educators: Express Employment Professionals, John Gardner of TRIAD Leadership Group, KidSTREAM, Ventura County Credit Union, and Gary Cushing of Marie Callender’s in Camarillo.

Ian also received certificates from the City of Camarillo, presented by Mayor Shawn Mulchay; Supervisor Kelly Long, presented by Brian Miller; and Assemblymember Jacqui Irwin, Senator Monique Limon, and Congresswoman Julia Brownley who were unable to attend.

Here are more reasons why Ian received the honor:

School Leadership and Responsibilities: Ian McGuire is our school's Service Learning Coordinator, where he oversees all 11th and 12th-grade students (Over 120 students) in their efforts to complete their requirements for earning the International Baccalaureate Career-related studies program certificates. This is in addition to being the school's computer programming instructor, a pathway at ACE that Mr. McGuire built himself for our students.

Extra-Curricular Activity Commitments: When not directing our service-learning activities, Mr. McGuire oversees ACE's video game club and our school's technology needs. He heads a team of advanced students in being our school's Chromebook repair department.

Student & Teacher Academic Relationships: Mr. McGuire is a teacher many of our students will see across the full four years of their education at ACE. To watch students grow from being freshmen in his room into graduating seniors is a joy to watch.

Impacts on students: Mr. McGuire values one-on-one student relationships and teaching opportunities with all students. This is in addition to the students that he teaches content to as well. Many of his students walk into his classroom with little to no prior knowledge in computer programming, and some of those students leave his program with a career position in hand because of what Mr. McGuire has taught them.

Subject Matter Influence: Last school year Mr. McGuire worked with Oxnard College to articulate with them ACE's two upperclassmen computer programming courses, allowing ACE students to earn college credit by taking those two courses with him. He has also developed ACE into a CISCO Networking Academy. With new technology and new directions in the world of computer science each year, Mr.
McGuire has continued to evolve his course offerings to meet the ever-changing needs of the industry and to bring that to our students.

ABOUT THE EDUCATOR OF THE MONTH PROGRAM

The WVCBA Education Committee supports and plans the Camarillo Educator of the Month program each school year. The program began in 1987 by the Camarillo Chamber of Commerce to provide special recognition for local educators who have demonstrated excellence in carrying out their duties. Principals and parent-teacher organizations from Pleasant Valley, Somis, Oxnard Union and Ventura County Schools (in Camarillo area only), Mesa School Districts, Charter Schools and CSU Channel Islands are asked to nominate an educator. Six educators are recognized throughout the school year.
