Oxnard Leadership Tours the City's Public Services

Have you ever thought about what happens to your trash after it’s picked up? Or maybe you’ve wondered what water goes through before it comes out of your tap?

Participants in the 2019 Oxnard Leadership Program went behind-the-scenes for a daylong exploration of the City of Oxnard’s public services. The sixth session was coordinated with the help of Barbara Wulf, Outreach/Education Specialist from the City of Oxnard's Water Division.

The morning started at the Advanced Water Purification Facility, where they learned from Wastewater Operations Manager/CPO Vince Ines how Oxnard is leading the way when it comes to water purification.

​The innovative facility uses one of the world’s most highly developed purification processes to produce safe and clean water from treated wastewater. He also took the group on a tour of the Wastewater Treatment Plant and walked them through the various phases that waste water goes through to become clean, recycled water.

After having Domino’s Pizza for lunch sponsored by JaniTek Cleaning Solutions, the afternoon began with a visit to the City Maintenance Yard where they met with representatives from Parks, Special Districts, Maintenance, Facilities and Fleet Services to get a better understanding of how each division helps maintain the city’s parks and streets.

During their visit to the Water Campus, Water Utility Manager Omar Castro and Water Resources Manager Nancy Broschart explained how the city analyzes water levels, and how it tracks quality and consumption.

For their final visit of the day, the group toured Del Norte Regional Recycling and Transfer Station with Manager Todd Housley. Del Norte is responsible for accepting, transferring and disposing of approximately 200,000 tons of solid waste each year. They also learned about the buyback center for recyclable aluminum cans, beverage containers and glass, and the recyclable hazardous waste center for batteries, used motor oil, water-based paint, etc.  

​Every year, the Oxnard Leadership Program leads participants through 10 unique, day-long experiences to gain a better understanding and appreciation of Oxnard and the surrounding areas’ realities, opportunities and challenges. Each session includes visits to various locations and provides participants with a unique opportunity to meet key business and government leaders who play integral roles in the region.

In July, session seven will focus on Health and Human Services, with visits to St. John’s Regional Medical Center, St. John’s Food Pantry and FOOD Share.
