Chamber remains strong advocate for Fisherman's Wharf project

10/17/2017

On October 12 the California Coastal Commission met in Chula Vista to address a myriad of agenda items. The Fisherman's Wharf project in Channel Islands Harbor was one of those items. The reason it was on the agenda stems from a dispute that has escalated between the city of Oxnard and county of Ventura over who has approval and permitting authority for the redevelopment project.

The dispute was taken to the Coastal Commission in an effort for resolve the matter. However, after miles of travel and hours of waiting the Commission basically said, go back and figure this out yourselves. So here we are back to square one.

The Chamber supports the redevelopment project at Fisherman's Wharf because it revitalizes a blighted corner that is the gateway to Channel Islands Harbor. It also provides high quality rental housing, which is in extreme demand. Those additional housing units will also help support other retail, restaurants and service industries in the Harbor area.

We encourage the two government agencies to seek a third party mediator to resolve the dispute and move the project forward.

I fully support long overdue development of this area, feel it should be entirely put into the hands of the City of Oxnard and not co-owned and all this hassle and "doing nothing" maybe could be alleviated. Also, I would be in favor of a hotel being built there rather than apartments. The other hotel in this area is really not very visible since the Lobster Trap and old hotel went out of business, but one located here overlooking the channel would draw visitors and income. It could be a smaller, boutique hotel, but a well-known name.

The Harbor Area is designated as a Visitor Serving Commercial Area. As such it can attract new retail businesses thereby providing jobs, sales tax and or Hotel tax income to the Community. On site rental residential will at best provide only local neighborhood commercial uses such as convenience stores.
The City still has areas that can serve "high end rentals" which by State Law still requires a portion of the units to be "Affordable" to low and moderate income groups.Conversely, there are very few locations in the City that can serve visitors to our Area. Rental Units at this location is not in the best interest of our City.

We need to revitalize Fisherman’s Wharf Revitalization for our community! Its time to stop politicizing this project and do what is best for our community…fix this horribly blighted area and move forward with the proposal that is on the table.

Our community really deserves this upgrade! It will do so much good for our local youth and families. With our close proximity to the Pacific Ocean, Oxnard deserves to have nice attractions in the Channel Islands Harbor. I really hope that our elected officials and the government staff at the City of Oxnard will work with the County of Ventura to make this happen. It would be a shame for local politics to get in the way of improvements for our community.

I wholeheartedly agree with the Oxnard Chamber of Commerce! There is a slow job market compared to other suburban and larger metropolitan areas in Ventura County. This project will provide many opportunities for jobs ranging from local services to retail to restaurants to watersport rentals. We need to close the gap on unemployment locally and renovating old space will help!

The Fisherman's Wharf in Channel Islands Harbor is long over due for renovation. It is time to turn swords into ploughshares and understand that the proposed plan will be mutually beneficial for all. Timely completion of this matter will prove to be a source of pride for the entirety of Ventura County! Let's get this project moving ASAP!

I fully support this project because I would like to see major improvements in and around the harbor. The proposed project would offer and inviting and safe place for my family. I love the idea of more retail space and an additional nice park would be great too.

I fully support this project that has been long overdue! It will provide improvements in and around the harbor for residents and families visiting. It will open up opportunities for businesses and provide more of an attraction to that part of southern California. Let's see Fisherman's Wharf in Channel Islands happen!

I am in full support of this project. Fisherman's Warf has been such a stamp in Oxnard's community for years. We must continue to strive for redevelopment in our community. The rehabilitation of this Warf will create more public commercial use which in turn will benefit the growth of Oxnard.

Redeveloping Fisherman's Wharf would make this area a unique regional amenity for families. We should put our best foot forward and invest in our coastline to attract visitors, families and local residents. Please move forward with this project!

I am totally in favor of fixing up the harbor so that we residents can enjoy it once more. When I moved here in 1991 it was great, but it has lost its' appeal because of vacancies and neglect and really needs help NOW.

The current state of our Fishermans Wharf is unacceptable! The project bein proposed would not only greatly improve this community gateway but also provide much-needed dining, shopping and nice rental housing for our community. Let's get this project going!

I truly hope that this project will get started soon! By making improvements like this, Oxnard will become more of a safe environment for families for generation to come. The Fisherman's Wharf Project is so important for improving the socioeconomic status of Oxnard. Can't wait to see the changes to come!

I was really hoping that the Coastal Commission would approve this project! I'm looking forward to the day when I can take my grand kids and their kids to the new 1-acre park that this project will provide. Hopefully it'll be in my lifetime!

The Fishemans Wharf has been such a big part of our community and will still be it for years to come. I’m for this project of revitalization to a historic piece of Oxnard. Having such beautiful places all around us, I believe this area should not be dismissed and be beautiful again too.

I was so excited to initially hear about this project! I can't believe that anyone opposes upgrades at the Fisherman's Wharf. It would be so great to have improvements in this area, especially for teenagers. It will give them somewhere safe to go after school to hang out. I can't wait to see this happen!

Can't wait! The Channel Islands Harbor is in dying need of an upgrade, especially ever since the Whale's Tail closed. You know the area isn't doing well when an iconic restaurant goes under. All hands on deck for this project!

With the Channel Islands harbor being a hub for community activity I strongly support a revitalization. I could see the Harbor becoming a hub for community activity!

I hope the two government agencies will work together for the betterment of both communities. The project will benefit both the City of Oxnard and the County of Ventura. Let's be innovative and move towards progress instead of being drowned in old-thinking and bureaucracy!
