Transportation in and around Oxnard is easy due to its central location near several major California highways and the Oxnard Transportation Center, the city’s hub for rail and bus service. Amtrak’s intercity trains and Metrolink commuter trains provide service to and from the San Fernando Valley and Los Angeles areas. Amtrak’s coastal train service offers routes to and from San Diego, Los Angeles, Santa Barbara and beyond.
Oxnard is about 75 minutes northwest of Los Angeles Airport (LAX) and 50 minutes west of Burbank Airport (BUR). Located near downtown, Oxnard Airport (OXR) is owned by Ventura County and has fixed based operators providing services such as chartered flights, aircraft maintenance and pilot supplies. The airport has several car rental agencies and shuttle service to LAX.
The Ventura County Harbor Department manages 310 acres (200 acres on land and 110 acres of water) comprising the Channel Islands Harbor. Guest slips are available. Visiting vessels should report to the Harbormaster for slip assignments. The Harbor Patrol monitors VHF-FM channel 16, 24 hours a day.

Oxnard is served by four elementary school districts and one high school district, offering students excellent classrooms, teachers and support teams. Oxnard’s high schools offer numerous Career Education Academies and Pathways programs, which prepare students with hands-on knowledge and skills for success in college and careers. An eighth high school is set to open in 2022-23.
Oxnard College is a public, two-year community college with 7,451 students enrolled in 2017-18. It offers 18 certificate programs, 17 Associate degrees for transfer and 37 Associate degrees with classes in over 60 disciplines. Ventura Community College also is nearby.
California State University-Channel Islands is a public, four-year college located in Camarillo. The school has 7,455 students enrolled in 2019 and offers 53 types of Bachelor's degrees, six Master's degrees, 19 teaching credentials and a doctorate in education.

City of Oxnard
The Oxnard City Council consists of an elected Mayor holding a two-year term and four council members elected at large for four-year overlapping terms.
After each election the Mayor appoints one of the council members to serve as Mayor Pro Tem to preside over City Council functions in the Mayor's absence.
The City Council governs the City in a manner that promotes a sound financial base, and responds to the current and future needs and concerns of City residents and businesses. To accomplish this, the Council appoints the City Manager and City Attorney, enacts City ordinances, establishes policy for administrative staff, and approves and oversees the budget of expenditures for the City.
The Council also serves as the board of the City of Oxnard Financing Authority (COFA), the City’s Community Development Commission Successor Agency, and, supplemented by two Tenant Commissioners, serves as the City’s Housing Authority.
Regular City Council meetings are held on Tuesday at 6:00 PM at the Council Chamber, 305 W. 3rd Street.

Health Care Services

In Oxnard, St. John’s Regional Medical Center features 265 beds, including a 23-bed acute rehabilitation unit. The Center offers comprehensive services including emergency, cardiac and cancer care, specialty surgery services, and a maternity and birthing center.
Located in Ventura, Community Memorial Hospital is a nonprofit, 250-bed, community-owned regional hospital and health center. The facility offers emergency, surgical, maternity, rehabilitation and support services.
Naval Base Ventura County
Naval Base Ventura County (NBVC) is strategically located in a non-encroached coastal area of Southern California. It is a key element in the Department of Defense infrastructure because of its superior geographical location. It provides a valuable contribution to the readiness of the Department of Defense’s total force, including development and testing of new systems, joint warfare experimentation, training and readiness, and Homeland Defense.
NBVC activities support the Department of Defense's joint missions. The location provides valuable airfield, seaport, railhead, and base facilities in support of multiple tenant operations by all branches of the military, including the Reserve and Air National Guard.
NBVC is composed of two operating facilities – Point Mugu and Port Hueneme – that were consolidated to serve as the home to six major tenant commands:
