Ever wonder what happens after your trash and recycling are picked up or before drinkable water comes out of your tap? On Friday, September 20, Oxnard Leadership 2024 went behind-the-scenes with Oxnard's Public Works Department for an eye-opening day to learn about these critical city-provided services and more. To kick off the ninth (and second-to-last) session of 2024, the group met with Public Works Director Michael Wolfe at the Advanced Water Purification Facility. The innovative facility uses one of the world’s most highly developed purification processes to produce safe, clean water from treated wastewater that is used for parks, agriculture crops, athletic fields, etc. The group also received eye-opening tours from the enthusiastic teams at the Wastewater Treatment Plant (recycles water to the AWPF or discharged to the ocean), Del Norte Regional Recycling and Transfer Station (trash, food/organic waste and recycling), and the Water Campus (purifies water for drinkable tap water).
A special thank you to session coordinators Brenda Heredia, Water Conservation Outreach Supervisor (and Oxnard Leadership Class of 2022), and Veronica Cortez, Water Conservation Outreach Specialist. The application window is open for the 2025 Oxnard Leadership Program! Civic-minded community leaders are invited to apply by October 31. Click here to learn more and apply.
